How Long Does a CT Scan Take?

The CT scan itself is usually fast. In many cases, the imaging process may only take a few minutes once the patient is inside the scanning room. However, the total hospital visit can take much longer because of registration, consultation, payment, waiting time and report preparation.

Patients should not plan their schedule based only on the scan time. A routine outpatient CT visit may require several steps before and after the actual scan.

When Are CT Images Available?

CT images may become available relatively quickly after the scan. In some hospitals, images can be reviewed by doctors through the hospital system soon after completion.

However, image availability is not the same as a formal written report. The written report is usually prepared by a radiologist and may take additional time.
