Do You Need a Referral for PET-CT in China?

In many public hospitals in China, patients usually need a doctor’s order before PET-CT can be scheduled. This means the patient first sees a doctor, the doctor reviews symptoms and medical records, and then decides whether PET-CT is appropriate.

For foreign patients, this process may feel different from private imaging centers in some countries where patients can sometimes book scans directly.

Why PET-CT Often Requires Doctor Approval

PET-CT is a specialized imaging examination. It uses a radioactive tracer and is commonly used for cancer staging, treatment response evaluation, recurrence assessment and selected cardiac or neurological indications.

Because PET-CT is more complex than a standard scan, hospitals usually want a clear medical reason before arranging the examination.

Which Doctors Can Order PET-CT?

What Should Foreign Patients Prepare?

Important: A previous doctor’s recommendation from another country can be helpful, but the Chinese hospital may still require its own doctor to issue the PET-CT order.

Can Foreigners Book PET-CT Without a Referral?

It depends on the hospital. Some hospitals may require a local doctor consultation first. Others may accept previous medical records and arrange evaluation more quickly. Public hospitals usually have stricter procedures than private or international medical facilities.

Can PET-CT Be Arranged Quickly?

Sometimes. PET-CT can often be arranged faster in Beijing than in many countries, but same-day PET-CT is not guaranteed because tracer supply, preparation and hospital scheduling all matter.
